With the Summer season of 2015 coming to a close Monster Musume’s last episode aired yesterday. When I tuned in I was surprised to see it ranked second on Crunchyroll’s popular page. What’s the deal with these monster girls? In case you don’t know what Monster Musume is, it’s an ecchi harem comedy that took this season by storm. (Also known by the English title of Everyday life with Monster Girls.) It frequently popped up on ANN’s feed (including a comedic article that just takes information from the show and ranks the harem members by level of danger and date-ability), was promoted by Crunchyroll and caught even more attention with its invention of the 23-foot long body pillow. But the biggest hype and draw of the show was two words: monster girls. I really want to know where the hype for monster girls originated among American fans. I’ve heard speculation that it was due to the North American manga publisher Seven Seas picking up the titles of Franken Fran, My Monster Secret, Nurse Hitomi’s Monster Infirmary A Centaur’s Life and the manga version of Monster Musume all between 2013 and right up to this past February. This apparently gave fans the access and time to start the monster girl craze. While I’m skeptical that this is the only reason for the trend, it’s the only one I’ve found that makes sense.
